Bio of Pastor Delbert Hicks


    Delbert Hicks was born to Alex and Eddie Mae Hicks; he was one of fourteen children born to this union.

He is a native of Toledo, OH. He was educated in the public school system, graduating from Macomber Vocational High School for boys. Architectural, Engineering was his specialized field of study. After graduating from Macomber, he enrolled in the University of Toledo and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering.

    Pastor Hicks began his walk with God at an early age and was appointed to the office of Deacon at the New Home Missionary Baptist Church in Toledo, OH. Under the leadership of Pastor Dennis Byrd, the founder of House of Byrd Music Publishing Co., Pastor Hicks served as Minister of Music. There he showcased his music, writing skills, and wrote original music for a collaborative project: "Lord I Thank You So Much." His album single titled "God Will Take Care of You," was the number two song on the double album release. He was later called to the Word Ministry, licensed and ordained to preach by the Rev. Dennis J. Byrd, Pastor of New Home Missionary Baptist (at that time), where he was a faithful member for his entire Christian walk until his relocation to the Shenandoah Valley. 

    In the Fall of 1989, he and his family relocated to the Winchester, VA. Pastor Hicks continued his corporate career at the Lear Corp. in Strasburg, VA as a Development Engineer. After some time, he was promoted to Manager of the Corporate Process Engineering Group, reporting out of Dearborn, MI. Shortly after, he joined Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, and became an associate minister, as well as a musician under the leadership of Rev. John Scott and later under Pastor Gilbert M. Mack Jr. In 2001, he was called to position of interim Pastor at Zion Baptist Church, in Berryville VA, and installed as Pastor in Jan. 2003. Pastor Hicks still serves there today. During his Pastorate tenor, Zion has grown in many different areas; Church Membership/Discipleship; Outreach; Youth, Men’s, and Women’s ministries. Zion has hosted Women’s Conferences under the Leadership of First Lady Cecilia Hicks. Bible Study and Sunday school attendance has increased because Pastor Hicks is a believer in teaching, and preaching the word of God with power and conviction. 

    Pastor Hicks has a calling and deep passion for children and young people, which keeps him young at heart. He serves as a mentor for the many students who attend Zion throughout the school year from Shenandoah University. He has also allowed them to use and home their gifts in the worship experience. Pastor Hicks is married to Cecilia M. Hicks, also of Toledo, OH. He and his bride of over 30 years were blessed with 2 wonderful sons; Evonn Delbert and Ethan Alex, and three beautiful grandchildren; ShaZayah, Nicodemus, Noweay. They are active in ministries at Zion, as well as spreading the gospel to their generation.

Pastor Hicks favorite scripture is "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him and he shall direct your paths."   Proverbs 3:5-6
